“Genuine bravery for a writer.... It is about calmly speaking the truth when everyone else is silenced, when the truth cannot be expressed. It is about speaking out with a different voice, risking the wrath of the state and offending everyone, for the sake of the truth, and the writer’s conscience.”

Pulled a couple of books off my shelves tonight: Dame Vera Lynn, the British singer who became a famous- and beloved- entertainer during World War II died yesterday at the age of 103. My earliest memory of her songs were of my grandmother, who lived with my family, playing her LP of Lynn's Hits of the Blitz. As a child I could warble A Nightingale Sang In Berkley Square, The White Cliffs of Dover, This Is The Army Mr. Jones, Kiss Me Goodnight Sergeant Major, etc. just as quickly and easily as I could any contemporary music... sometimes more so. As I flipped through Vera Lynn's autobiography, I paused on the chapter where she was describing singing at the London Palladium to the sound of bombs dropping during an air raid. And then I thought about the modern crop of singers... yes, well... perhaps we should change the subject. Vera Lynn provided much of the soundtrack for the war years and was one of the last surviving voices of that era. She will be missed.
