Today's choice of a book I love is Stephen Leacock's 1912 humourous, affectionate ode to life in small town Canada, Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town. The book contains a series of short stories set in the fictional town of Mariposa; though inspired by Orillia, Ontario, Leacock was quick to point out that Mariposa could be any small town in Canada: "Mariposa is not a real town. On the contrary, it is about seventy or eighty of them. You may find them all the way from Lake Superior to the sea, with the same square streets and the same maple trees and the same churches and hotels." Truly a Canadian classic.

I enjoy all of Jane Austen's novels but have a particular fondness for Persuasion and its sweet, mature, level-headed heroine Anne Elliot. Also, Captain Wentworth... well, who doesn't love a man in uniform?Persuasion is Jane Austen's last completed novel, and was published six months after her death in 1817. Related Posts:My next choice for the book challenge is David Dodge's 1952 jewel heist thriller To Catch A Thief. I love a good mystery with well-developed characters and a sharp plot, and that's exactly what To Catch A Thief is. Not to be confused with the Alfred Hitchcock movie adaptation filmed a few years later, which is okay but much inferior to the book.
