The film picks up a short time after the final episode, and the crew of Serenity- led by Captain Mal Reynolds- is being pursued by The Operative, an assassin sent by the Alliance to kill River in order to keep her from telling what she knows. In the scene below, the Operative has taken Inara, who now lives on a planet rather than on the ship, hostage and forces her to send for the Serenity crew, planning to lead them into a trap.
The movie clip below is from the 2005 film Serenity, which is a follow up to the 2002 science fiction series Firefly which was abruptly and ignominiously cancelled after it's first season. Serenity attempts to wrap up the various plot threads which were left hanging at the end of the show's 14 episode run. These include the mystery of River Tam and the origin of the deadly and disgusting Reavers. I've never really understood how the failed ideology of communism retains a sort of hipster coolness for some people when not only has it proved financially ruinous everywhere it's been implemented, but has also resulted in abject misery and mass death. Worse, our education systems seem determined to downplay- or outright hide- the evils of communism while touting it as a "compassionate" and "fair" system which merely has never been administered properly. After all, you can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs... or killing a few hundred million people... whatever the expression is... It's also depressing to see so many young voters embracing the ideals- so called- of the Justin Trudeaus, Jeremy Corbins, and Bernie Sanders of the world. Barring the possibility of mass stupidity, the most likely explanation is that they've been badly educated- deliberately so- on just what communism entails, and how it inevitably ends and have, as of yet, little acquaintance with the real world. But take heart- all is not lost; there are still pockets of resistance where children, despite what nonsense they may get at school, are being raised to think sensibly. Case in point- yesterday morning at my sister's & brother-in-law's (the ones with nine kids) house: Fourteen year old, helping his father make lunches for all school aged siblings and discussing politics, as one does: "This is communism! You guys buy all the groceries, hand it out to all of us equally, but keep the best snacks for yourselves!" My sister, bustling about making sure everyone is wearing pants and socks: "Not quite; if we put all of you out to work, confiscated your wages, and used your money to buy our snacks, that would be communism." Now all of their kids hate communism. “Comrades!' he cried. 'You do not imagine, I hope, that we pigs are doing this in a spirit of selfishness and privilege? Many of us actually dislike milk and apples. I dislike them myself. Our sole object in taking these things is to preserve our health. Milk and apples (this has been proved by Science, comrades) contain substances absolutely necessary to the well-being of a pig. We pigs are brainworkers. The whole management and organisation of this farm depend on us. Day and night we are watching over your welfare. It is for your sake that we drink the milk and eat those apples.” ― George Orwell, Animal Farm Related Posts: O Schone Nacht is one of the songs we're working on in choir. The music was written in 1877 by German composer Johannes Brahms, and the lyrics are a poem by Georg Friedrich Daumer, 19th century German philosopher/poet. Although it's not what he's best known for, Brahms wrote a great number of vocal compositions and O Schone Nacht (O Lovely Night) is one of these, a four part chorus. Choirs love doing this piece, because it's beautiful, has a lovely piano accompaniment, and - being in the public domain- is free (always a consideration for frugal community choirs). Here are the words of Daumer's poem: O schöne Nacht! And the English translation: O Lovely Night! In the sky, magically, the moon shines in all its splendor; around it, the pleasant company of little stars. The dew glistens brightly on the green stem; in the lilac bush, the nightengale sings lustily; The youth steals away quietly to his love - O lovely night! -translation by Paine/Jeffers (adapt. DC)
