I was going through some older pictures on my phone the other day, looking for one in particular, and became aware that one of my nephews had been creatively "editing" some of the images. There were various pictures of his siblings and cousins adorned with goggle eyes and/or moustaches, and this gem: This leads me to reiterate my oft-stated point: girls and boys are very different creatures. I sent this image to my sister- whose son was the artist in question- and her response was, "Arrgh! What is it about the word 'poop'?!" Meanwhile, my college professor older brother opined that the entire scene had "a certain profundity to it," leading me to the conclusion that these differences do not go away.

As hard as it is to believe now, there was a time when the CBC used to be able to occasionally produce something worth watching. Road To Avonlea, based on the writings of L.M. Montgomery, was a series which ran for seven seasons (1990-1996) and it was, I think, the last time that the CBC managed to produce a successful- and good- family show. Coming off of this triumph, the corporation promptly snatched defeat from the jaws of victory by producing another show "based" on Montgomery's work- Emily of New Moon (1998-2000)- in which they did the opposite of everything which made Road To Avonlea a success. The plotting, writing, and acting on Emily were all eye-wateringly bad... a veritable cornucopia of crap which managed to make every single character unlikable and Prince Edward Island appear to be a sinister place inhabited mostly by the mentally ill and criminally insane. It was rather impressive in a way, to see just how much incompetence could be jam packed into one show, but at the end of the day it was just plain awful and no one wanted to watch it. The only reason Emily managed to last three seasons- the last one abbreviated- is because it was on the CBC, where taxpayer money is routinely squandered on unwatchable trash and they have no problem keeping shows that have no viewership on life support. Let us, however, avert our eyes from that train wreck and return to contemplating the excellence of Road To Avonlea. Road To Avonlea is truly a family show-one that you can sit down with the entire family and have a good time watching. And that is what some of my family is now doing on Friday nights. Our Sunday night movie- formerly attended by various friends and family members- was derailed by Covid restrictions unfortunately. However, one of my sisters received the entire series of Road To Avonlea for Christmas and we've decided to work our way through all seven seasons by having a potluck supper and watching two episodes every Friday night. This actually commenced last week, but there was a snowstorm, the roads were bad, and I didn't make it. Last night we watched episodes 3 & 4 of season 1: "The Quarantine At Alexander Abraham's" and "The Materializing Of Duncan McTavish" both based on short stories by L.M. Montgomery. They were a lot of fun, though there were a few grim chuckles when Dr Blair announced a 14 day quarantine in episode 3. In any case, if you're looking for a show which you can watch with your kids, Road To Avonlea is a great choice.

About MeI'm a lover of good books, classic movies, and well-written shows (as well as some pretty cheesy ones, to be completely honest). Categories
