Ambitious DI Rachael Carey is assigned to investigate the suspected homicide and hopes that the case will be a stepping stone to furthering her career. Initially convinced of Emery's guilt, she begins to have doubts when the case is interfered with by someone high up in MI5, the Security Service. A video engineer with whom she consults raises the possibility that the CCTV footage has been tampered with, using deepfake technology. Increasingly convinced that Emery is being set up for some reason, Carey is unsure who to believe or trust as it becomes clear that some in the intelligence agency have a vested interest in the crime not being solved, and that doing so may end her promising career.
I enjoyed The Capture, which is a smart and twisty tale with compelling lead characters. Towards the end of the series though, I found it getting a bit too twisty and unrealistic... I found myself thinking "Come on, now- that's a bit much to swallow." Also, I found the resolution to be ultimately unsatisfying. I understand that they were setting up for a possible second series, but still, it ended on rather a sour note. On the whole, though, The Capture is an enjoyable watch, and it really makes you think about just how much we're under surveillance as we go about our everyday lives. It also gives a rather unsettling warning about the very possible misuses of deepfake technology.
