Back in Iping, people have started to calm down when a shabby individual is noticed in the village. Understandably a little wary of strangers at the moment, the villagers are suspicious when he is seen lurking around the inn. When one of the local shop owners sees the tramp outside the inn window carrying a filled bag, he starts shouting "Thief!" and begins to give chase. Unfortunately, he is suddenly tripped up and knocked down by something- or someone- he can't see, as the tramp takes to his heels.
The dubious duo make their way to Port Stowe where Marvel strikes up a conversation with an old seaman sitting on a bench. The man is talking excitedly about a news report about an invisible man causing havoc in a nearby town. Marvel starts to tell the fellow that he knows T.I.M., but suddenly appears to be hurt in some way and quickly backtracks, saying the tale is a hoax. The old man is annoyed by the conversation but thinks little of it until he later hears of a series of robberies in which no one saw any perpetrator but did see money floating away, apparently unsupported. The old sailor then realizes that he had a lucky escape.
The running man is, of course, Mr. Marvel and he runs into the local pub in a panic, screaming for people to save him from The Invisible Man. The people in the pub are startled to say the least, especially when the windows are smashed out by an unseen force. They rally around though: the bartender hides Marvel and a patron with a gun (an American) gets ready to shoot T.I.M. if he comes through the entrance. Instead, he sneaks in the back door and attacks Marvel. A few of the other men in the pub come to his defense, and the American aims for the empty spot where he thinks T.I.M. is and fires his gun. He is sure that he hit him and tells the others to feel about for an invisible body. They don't find one.
