Hot Fuzz stars Simon Pegg (who was also co-writer) as an over-achieving London police officer named Nicholas Angel who solves so many crimes that he's making his colleagues look bad. Because of this, when he is promoted to sergeant his department has him transferred to a tiny town in Gloucestershire, called Sandford.
A lot of the credit for the film's success goes to Simon Pegg, and not just because he helped write the film. As Sergeant Nicholas Angel, he is intense and overly-serious yet likeable, not an easy combination. And he never winks at the camera, staying firmly in character no matter what ridiculous situation he's in the middle of. Also, Hot Fuzz was obviously made by people who love the '80's and '90's cop movies, because the film pokes affectionate fun at them, never becoming sneering or mean-spirited.
