― Thomas a Kempis
I've got a lot going on right now, which is one reason I needed to get away for a few days by myself... I was rapidly burning out. Among other things that have temporarily fallen by the wayside is my sewing, because I simply don't have time. Last night however, I quickly whipped up a pillowcase for my nephew who is turning four today. He's currently into Mario Bros. and I used some Raccoon Mario fabric I picked up a while ago for the case. I'll also pick up a book or puzzle for him tomorrow on my lunch break, since his family party is at suppertime. Sadly, the only other things that I've been sewing are masks; I just made a bunch more for one of my sisters because she's a school teacher, is starting back this week, and wearing masks is required in the classrooms. I've sewn things which I've disliked before, but never so many of them. These are no fun to work on at all, and I'm so tired of them. I did start to knit socks while I was in Lunenburg, but didn't spend much time at it and only finished one. I'll have to get back at it and finish the second one- sometime this week hopefully. Related Posts:The above image is from the 1968 Disney film The Love Bug, starring Dean Jones, Michelle Lee, David Tomlinson, and Buddy Hackett. The movie is about Jones' character Jim Douglas- a race car driver- ending up the reluctant owner of a Volkswagen Beetle (Herbie) which is actually sentient. As I typed that sentence, it struck me just how unlikely a pitch for a movie that would have been... it worked though, because the film was a big hit for Disney. After Douglas improbably starts winning races with the feisty little car, Peter Thorndyke, the shady car dealer who sold Herbie to him (played by the always enjoyable David Tomlinson) tries to get the Bug back, through fair means or foul... mostly foul. The picture shown here is from my favourite scene in the film: Herbie is trying to play matchmaker between Jim and Carole Bennet (Michelle Lee), who works for Thorndyke. To that end, he locks his doors when she attempts to storm out of the car; she understandably concludes that Jim has locked her in and starts hammering on the window, yelling for help. Unfortunately, she only manages to attract the attention of a couple of hippies, who regard her shouts in a philosophical manner: I watched this movie recently with some family members, having not seen it since I was a child. I just realised this time around that the bearded hippie is also played by Dean Jones... is there nothing that man could not do? Most startling: the name of the hirsute individual sitting next to him. Oh, and F.Y.I.- the film is actually based on a 1961 story entitled Car, Boy, Girl written by one Gordon Buford who I can't find any other information about. Related Posts:So yes, I went back to Elizabeth's Books and bought the copy of Three Men In A Boat. I should have just got it the first time I was in, because I knew I wasn't going to be able to leave it there. I also went to that other book store I had seen, but it was a dud. It didn't appear to have a great selection of books and, even though you have to wear a mask and sanitise your hands before entering, the store had a sign up saying that you couldn't touch a book unless you were going to buy it. Deal breaker for me. I left. I did though find another book store as well: It didn't have as many books as Elizabeth's Books, but was a nice shop. I bought a copy of Elizabeth Gaskell's 1864 novel Wives and Daughters there. It's one that I have on my Kobo but like enough to want to own an actual copy of. And now I do. If you ever find yourself in Lunenburg looking for a book shop, of the three I found I'd definitely recommend Elizabeth's Books. Weird hours, but absolutely worth it. I'm back home now and, despite what it looks like, I did do some things other than hang around in book stores. I might do a post about that later on. I also watched a few movies during the evenings which I'll also be posting about soon.
