In the above scene, the case is over and Adam returns home to find the neighbour reenacting a scene from a play with Amanda, grabbing her in a clinch. Adam pulls a gun and says he's going to shoot the two of them for cheating on him. As the neighbour cowers behind her, Amanda shouts that he has no right, and then freezes in shock, realizing what she's said. Adam says, exactly: no one has the right to attempt to murder another person and, despite what she says, Amanda knows it. He then takes a bite of the gun, which is black licorice.
This image is from the 1949 comedy Adam's Rib which stars Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn as married lawyers. A crime is committed in which a woman thinks her husband is having an affair, follows him to where he meets the other woman, and fires a gun at them several times, hitting her husband in the shoulder. Naturally she has been charged with attempted murder. Adam and Amanda Bonner (Tracy and Hepburn) argue about the case at home, with Amanda taking the position that there is a double standard with adultery cases and that if thesituation was reversed, the man wouldn't even be charged. Adam maintains that to attempt to murder someone no matter the provocation is wrong and, more to the point, it's against the law. When Adam arrives at his office, he finds that he's been assigned to prosecute the case. When Amanda hears this, she seeks out the woman and offers to defend her. In court, Amanda argues that the defendant was driven to do what she did because of her husband's treatment of her. She also reiterates that she believes women and men are treated differently in cases like this. Adam maintains that the law is clear and, regardless of sex, the defendant's actions were illegal. Amanda and Adam's in court battle spills over into their home life, which becomes fraught with tension and resentment. The situation isn't helped by the presence of their artsy neighbour, who irritates Adam by being constantly under foot, flirting outrageously with Amanda, who thinks it's funny.
