In the end, it wasn't the Christmas that we had envisioned, but parts of the experience were actually quite enjoyable, and it was a Christmas that we won't soon forget.

The day before yesterday- Christmas Day- Eastern Canada was hit with a winter storm. New Brunswick and PEI got a lot of snow, but here in Nova Scotia the storm consisted mostly of freezing rain and high winds. This led to uprooted trees, downed power lines, and widespread power outages. I was at my parents' place and the power went out around 4:00 pm, just when we were preparing Christmas dinner. Fortunately the turkey had been cooked in the morning; we ate a lukewarm dinner by lamp and candle light, which was kind of fun. What wasn't so fun was the fact that my parents have a well, so when there's no power, there's no water. We managed but the lack of coffee was a bit of a hardship. As the outage continued for hours, we became concerned about the perishable food items and so carried them outside where the temperature was below zero and put them in the cars so that they would stay cold. We passed time in the evening sitting around the dining room table, working on puzzles in the lamp light and taking turns reading aloud from Little Women. The power remained out until around 11:00 am the following morning; there was much rejoicing when it came back on. We were fortunate, because some people lost their power for much longer, or had damages caused to their property by the storm. In the end, it wasn't the Christmas that we had envisioned, but parts of the experience were actually quite enjoyable, and it was a Christmas that we won't soon forget. "To sit alone in the lamplight with a book spread out before you, and hold intimate converse with men of unseen generations - such is a pleasure beyond compare. " -Kenko Yoshida Related Posts:
