In this scene, Mrs. Miniver (Garson) has wandered outside early in the morning, unable to sleep because her eldest son- a fighter pilot- is flying a sortie against the Germans and her husband is away, having sailed their boat across the Channel to take part in the Dunkirk evacuation. In their garden, she comes upon an injured German pilot, whose plane was shot down in a dogfight the night before. At gunpoint he forces her to take him into the house, demanding food and a coat to disguise his uniform. Though frightened- especially by the thought of her young daughter and son still asleep upstairs- Mrs. Miniver remains calm, feeding him while trying to come up with a way to alert the police to his presence.
