Minnie Driver stars as Grace, a young woman who was born with a heart defect which will eventually be fatal; at the beginning of the movie she has a heart transplant which saves her and allows her to live a normal life for the first time since she was a child. About a year after her transplant she meets Bob (David Duchovny) a grieving widower trying to recover from the death of his wife in a car accident. They are immediately drawn to each other, both unaware of the fact that Grace received Bob's wife's heart. As I said, it's preposterous, but the charm is in the chemistry between the two very likeable leads, and their surrounding group of friends and family.
In the above scene, Bob and Grace are on their first date and he takes her to stand on top of the first building that he ever designed (he's an architect). As they look out over the city, Bob hesitatingly asks if he can hold her hand; she gives it to him and they stand hand-in-hand in the moonlight. It's an innocently romantic moment- almost old fashioned, which is probably why I like it so much. This is not a couple of confident, worldly people who are going to end their first date by hopping into bed together. Bob and his wife were high school sweethearts; he hadn't dated anyone before or since, and Grace has never dated due to her medical condition. They're awkward, nervous, tentative, and very cute together... you can't help but root for them. And the boffo Rat Pack soundtrack doesn't hurt, either.
