The above image is from the 1950 movie Cyrano de Bergerac, based on the 1897 play of the same name. In it, Jose Ferrer plays the title character, the witty poet, expert swordsman who is hampered in his quest for love by the fact that he has a huge nose. He is in love with his cousin- Roxane-who considers Cyrano a friend and confidante. And he believes that she could never consider him as a suitor because of his giant schnoz. So when Roxane confides in him, telling him that she fancies a handsome guardsman named Christian de Neuvillette, he is devastated but not surprised. Wanting her happiness above all else, Cyrano agrees to help her, and befriends Christian. Christian tells him that he is infatuated with Roxane, but is very clumsy with words and fears trying to woo her. To help him, Cyrano the poet writes letters to Roxane, ostensibly from Christian, and she falls in love with his eloquence. Christian starts to feel guilty about this deception and tells Cyrano that he will speak to Roxane without help. He goes to her house, standing beneath her window to talk to her, but Roxane gets miffed because her smooth-talking lover is stumbling over his words like an inarticulate school boy. Cyrano, who has been watching this disaster unfold from the bushes, saves the day by standing under the balcony where Roxane can't see him, pretending to be Christian but in actuality pouring out his own feelings for her. This is all very unhealthy.
