There were only about twenty at Christmas dinner, because New Years is when our entire family gathers together to celebrate. There was plenty of food, fun, and laughter- too much food: it's been about six hours since we ate and I'm still feeling over-full. We had turkey, of course, but one of my sisters cooked a goose and brought that as well. This was interesting, because I'd never actually had goose before. It was good, but I don't think that it'll be replacing turkey as my poultry of choice for Christmas dinner any time soon.
A merry Christmas was had by all, including my parents' dog Jack who, being elderly, is a bit slow and stiff on cold winter mornings these days, but still in the festive spirit. I got off relatively easy in the food department this Christmas: I was on mashed potatoes and dessert for dinner (I made a fruit flan and a chocolate cream pie). For Christmas breakfast I baked a loaf of cinnamon bread and brought a platter of fresh fruit as well. Family New Years should be interesting, because my brother-in-law (married to my sister who hosts annually) built an axe-throwing target for their kids for Christmas. Not only that, but two of my other nephews got compound bows as gifts, which they brought to dinner today so they could practice in my parents' field. I have visions of guests being forced to run serpentine across my sister's lawn at New Years, to avoid flying axes and arrows, but no doubt it will all be fine. I must admit though, both axe throwing and archery are a lot of fun. Incidentally, the above gif is from the 1983 movie A Christmas Story, which is based on a few of the short stories in the 1966 humorous book by Jean Shepherd, In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash. Shepherd followed this book up in 1971 with Wanda Hickey's Night of Golden Memories And Other Disasters. The short story "Wanda Hickey's Night of Golden Memories" which gives its title to the book was my introduction to Shepherd's writing, as we read it in my grade eleven English class. It's a laugh-out-loud account of a teen's hapless misadventures at his junior prom and, while the tale provides a lot of amusement, it also evokes the occasional wince of reminiscent sympathy for the awkwardness and embarrassment of adolescence.

About MeI'm a lover of good books, classic movies, and well-written shows (as well as some pretty cheesy ones, to be completely honest). Categories
