In choir, we're singing Ocho Kandelikas, a song about Hanukkah. It was written in 1983 by Flory Jagoda, a Jewish American originally from Bosnia. She and her family fled Sarajevo when the Nazis invaded in 1941, she met an American soldier, got married, and arrived in the United States as a war bride. She is an expert guitarist/songwriter and specialises in songs written in Ladino, the language spoken by Sephardic (Spanish) Jews which is rooted in Old Spanish. Her song Ocho Kandelikas has a very Latin sound to it, and its lyrics describe the excitement felt by a child at the lighting of the menorah during Hanukkah.
