The Moons of Meer is out of print now, but was originally published in 1969. It was co-authored by Charles Warren Hollister and Judith Pike. I couldn't find anything about Judith Pike online (admittedly I didn't spend a lot of time looking) but Hollister was an American historian who specialized in the study of Medieval England. He wrote a number of history books; The Moons of Meer seems to have been his one venture into fiction writing.
I was chatting with one of my nephews on the weekend; he had just finished reading the Harry Potter books (again) and we were discussing various fantasy series. Obviously The Chronicles of Narnia were mentioned, as well as The Chronicles of Prydain, and The Lord of the Rings books. I also mentioned that as a youngster I had read a few of the Oz books... I only owned- well, still do own- The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, but one of my cousins had the entire collection and I borrowed a couple from her. While reminiscing about fantasy novels I had read as a child, my memory kicked in about a book which I had borrowed from my elementary school's library when I was about 8 years old, entitled The Moons of Meer. I hadn't thought about it in years and frankly, my memories of the plot and characters are pretty hazy. I do remember that I hugely enjoyed it at the time and that it was about two kids who went through some kind of tunnel and ended up on an alternate world called Meer, which had two moons. That's about all I remember, except I think there were also these cute creatures- their name escapes me- which hatched out of eggs. I tried googling it, but couldn't find much about the novel other than a picture of the cover (above) and a brief description which told me less than I could remember on my own, other than the fact that the kids were apparently from Arizona. About MeI'm a lover of good books, classic movies, and well-written shows (as well as some pretty cheesy ones, to be completely honest). Categories
