Always so encouraging. But what does actually lift their spirits is coming across an ancient site which Quatermain recognizes as being diamond mine works. This makes them think that the legends may be true and that they are close to finding King Solomon's Mines and- perhaps- Sir Henry's brother. They continue on until they reach the "Silent Ones," three giant statues which mark the way to the Place of Death, where the bodies of all the Kukuana kings are kept.
The men first go to Foulata, but Quatermain sees at once that she is too gravely injured to survive. She tells Good that she loves him, and he holds her in his arms as she dies, tears sliding silently down his face. As Captain Good grieves, Sir Henry points out grimly that they may not long outlive Foulata; the stone door is sealed shut and they don't know how to open it. They try, however, using all of their combined strength, but can't budge it. The stone slab is so heavy that they figure nothing short of dynamite will move it and, even if Infadoos and the other men managed to find their way through the tunnels to where they were- and found the hidden door- they would not be able to open it either. The men reverently lay out Foulata's body as best they can, then share the little bit of food and water they have with them. Their lamp sputters and slowly goes out, leaving them trapped in the dark with a dead body and a king's ransom worth of treasure.
