I was assigned pumpkin pie and sweet potato casserole:
Festivities are still ongoing, and I'm off to church this morning, but a quick update on Christmas thus far: we're all still reeling... or maybe rolling... from the amount of food consumed yesterday. The meal looked a little different than it was supposed to; our benevolent dictators waited until a couple days before Christmas-when everyone had their plans made and were eagerly looking forward to being together- to institute a bunch of new restrictions forbidding large gatherings. Because, in case anyone hadn't realised it by now, the cruelty is the point. More on that at a later date. In any case, suffice to say this resulted in a lot of scrambling to reorganize Christmas dinner, to comply- or at least appear to be complying (heh, heh) with the restrictions. I was assigned pumpkin pie and sweet potato casserole: And also roll making, which went somewhat awry; I forgot my yeast at home but found some in my parents' refrigerator at the homestead. Unfortunately, it was expired but I rolled the dice and tried using it anyway. My dough didn't rise. This necessitated making some last minute tea biscuits and getting a little creative with the unrisen dough. I rolled it out flat, brushed it with butter, sprinkled it with cinnamon sugar, then cut it into strips and twisted them. The result almost looked like I meant to do it: Christmas is one of the few times during the year when my mum uses her good china- Old Country Roses pattern. Her festive tablecloth is a little busy in conjunction with the china, but who cares? It was a big, cheerful splash of colour, and we can all use the cheer right about now. In the upper left corner is a dish of some of my homemade pickles I brought along as well. Hope everyone else is enjoying their Christmas holidays in spite of everything; spend as much time as you can enjoying this time with your family and friends.
