Well, it's the Canada Day long weekend and I've been away from the computer for most of it, spending time with family and friends. I have to say that I've had mixed feelings about celebrating this year... I love my country, really I do. I despise the government with every fiber of my being, however, and have seen some behaviours from every day Canadians over the last two years that, not gonna lie, have shaken me. That being said, I've also seen some really great behaviours from some Canadians... like I said: I'm conflicted. Given my current mood, I shunned any official events this year in favour of, as mentioned, time with friends and relations. A family at our church- up until COVID- hosted an annual Canada Day BBQ; this year was the first year back for that. On Friday I also walked the Canada 150 Trail with one of my sisters: Some of the family gathered to have dinner with my parents and later, I and two of my sisters drove out to Shubenacadie to watch the fireworks with another sister, her husband & two little girls, and our brother-in-law's parents, who live out that way. It was a great show, and we caught the tail end of the Celtic music open air concert that was going on right before it, which was fun. I suppose that this was technically an official event, but at least there were no politicians there, blathering at us. My nieces- four and two, respectively- had never seen fireworks before and were enthralled, despite being pretty tired: it was a full day, and 10 pm is way past their bedtime. The display was just as good- if not better- than the ones in town, and much less crowded. The only downside was the hordes of mosquitoes, which were on the attack and out for blood. “My kind of loyalty was loyalty to one's country, not to its institutions or its officeholders. The country is the real thing, the substantial thing, the eternal thing; it is the thing to watch over, and care for, and be loyal to; institutions are extraneous, they are its mere clothing, and clothing can wear out, become ragged, cease to be comfortable, cease to protect the body from winter, disease, and death.” ― Mark Twain, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court Related Posts:

About MeI'm a lover of good books, classic movies, and well-written shows (as well as some pretty cheesy ones, to be completely honest). Categories
