My mother also has a great interest in family histories- she's done a lot of work tracing the ancestry of ours- and loves to pour over old letters, photos, newspaper articles and the like. I do too; one of the most interesting books I ever read was a compilation of court records from cases which were tried in a European town during the Middle Ages...I recall one case where a landlord was attempting to collect rents and was set upon by several women who belaboured him with brooms... it made for fascinating reading. Then again, maybe I'm just really nosy. In any case, when I left last night Mum was leafing through the book and reporting with interest that Laura's grandfather had lived in Canada before moving to New York State. Who knew?
Yesterday was my mum's birthday, so I and two of my sisters picked up Chinese takeout and went down to the homestead to have dinner with our parents. We're going to have her party on Sunday afternoon when more of the family can be there, and we're all going in on a gift for her, but I also gave her a gift last night: a book of the family pictures, letters, etc. of Laura Ingalls Wilder. My mother is a big fan; one of my earliest memories is of her reading to us aloud from Little House In The Big Woods. She also adored the Michael Landon television series based- very loosely- on the books: I have memories of her sitting on the couch, wiping away tears as she watched a sad episode. Obviously she's a lot more tenderhearted than I... Oh, and I'd like to take this opportunity to voice my deep and abiding contempt for the mental midgets in the Association for Library Service to Children for their smarmy virtue signalling and abject cowardice in bowing to the Voice of the Perpetually Offended and removing Laura Ingalls Wilder's name from their award for children's literature. Wilder did more to foster imagination and a love of reading in children than any of those censorious jerks could ever hope to do, and her books will be known and loved long after the names of anyone involved in this rank stupidity are forgotten... if anyone knew them to begin with.
