I won't get into the plot here; truthfully, it's not that important. The point is in the title: A Muppet Family Christmas. They are a family gathering together at Christmas- a loud, weird, messy, and fractious one, but a family nonetheless, who enjoy spending time with each other. I can relate; when my huge family gets together at Christmas and New Years, we're crowded and loud and happy just being together.
My favourite part of the show is the finale where everyone is gathered by the fire, singing Christmas carols. The songs that really hit me are Statler and Waldorf singing I Heard the Bells On Christmas Day and Kermit & Robin singing John Denver's It's In Every One Of Us. When we watched it this week however, the entire scene got to me because that's what my family does: gather around the piano and have a carol sing. And this year we can't. To be honest, I teared up... not over the Muppets, but because we can't have our family Christmas and I miss it already.
Unfortunately, A Muppet Family Christmas has never been released on DVD in its entirety: due to some stupid licensing restrictions a few of the songs could only be shown on TV, not released for sale. This resulted in several songs- and in some cases, scenes- being cut for it's video release, including Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas and I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day which, as I mentioned, is one of my favourite parts so I've never bothered to purchase it. It can be found in it's entirety online if you look (cough, cough, YouTube, cough) though I of course would be shocked- shocked- if anyone watched it there.
