Back at his hotel in London, George is morosely packing to return to the States. Suddenly the telephone rings; it is Maud. She says she has a few questions to ask him, the first being his opinion on the subject of butter. George, confused, doesn't really have one, which Maud seems to find reassuring. She next asks him what he weighs and George, bewildered, says that he's weighed the same amount- 180 lbs- for years. Delighted by this response, Maud has one final question for George: what kind of wallpaper does he want in his den? Mystified, George asks her what she's talking about and Maud says that of course he must have a den with books and a piano to work on in it, and a picture of her which she'll have taken for him. Now completely at sea, George wants to know what's going on and Maud explains that she's trying to find out what kind of wallpaper he wants to have when they're married and settled in a house. George drops the phone. He hastily picks it up off the floor and asks Maud to repeat what she said about marriage. Maud says that after all, their engagement has been announced in the papers. As George stammers in shock Maud continues, saying that she hopes that he's not going to jilt her, because she's just met a very capable investigator who she's sure could help her sue for breach of promise. George asks her, what about Geoffrey, and Maud says simply that she changed her mind. Hardly able to believe it, George asks her if she'll marry him and Maud says that of course she will. Elated and excited, George says that he needs to see her and asks where she is... it turns out that she's just downstairs, calling from the hotel lobby. George asks if she's alone and when Maud says yes, he says that she won't be for long. He hangs up, grabs his coat, and the novel closes out as George heads out, banging his shins on his half-packed trunk in his haste to get to Maud.
