Before there was Hamilton, there was 1776, the 1969 Broadway musical which is based on the events surrounding the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The show won three Tony awards- including the one for Best Musical- and in 1972 was made into a movie.
The central character is John Adams (played by William Daniels in the film) and the musical follows his impassioned efforts to achieve independence from Britain for the American colonies.
