Well, we finished off the last two episodes of the 1995 version of Pride And Prejudice on Sunday night and it was great from start to finish. Mr. Wickham pays for his skeezy ways by being forced by Mr. Darcy to marry Lydia who is so stupid, selfish and oblivious that he's guaranteed to be miserable for the rest of his life. Which is no more than he deserves. Elizabeth feistily puts Lady Catherine in her place in a great scene, and Mr. Bingley and Jane finally get engaged. Encouraged by Elizabeth's refusal to promise Lady Catherine that she would never become betrothed to him, Darcy proposes once again- and makes a much better job of it- and Elizabeth happily accepts him. I love the wedding scene, more for what's going on in the background than for the actual ceremony... the affectionate look that the Gardiners exchange during the vows... the sour expression on Caroline Bingley's face... the way Charlotte's eyes cut sideways to look at Mr. Collins when the vicar intones the reasons for marriage... all great. And so are the cut-aways to a hatchet faced Lady Catherine sitting in her parlour and to Lydia and Wickham: she's giggling and pawing at him while he attempts to drink himself into oblivion. Then, as they leave the church, we see the first full, genuine smile on Darcy's face in the six hours of the mini series.
