I'm astonished by the monumental arrogance of people who demand historical figures be judged by modern social mores and seem to think that anyone- past, present, or future- who doesn't exactly mirror their beliefs must be condemned. They are offended- or pretend to be- that persons who lived in the 1800's did not comply with "progressive" sensibilities which didn't exist twenty years ago, let alone two hundred. I'm further amazed by the fact that this bunch of malcontents, who demand that everyone march in ideological lockstep- or else- have deluded themselves into thinking that, had they been alive during a previous time period, they would have been the independent thinkers. What a joke.
Less surprising, unfortunately, is the cowardice displayed by our so-called leaders who can't muster up enough confidence, conviction, or courage to tell this relatively small band of perpetually offended jerks to go pound sand. They won't speak the obvious truth: these people don't hate poor old Sir John per se, they hate what he stands for- western culture and civilisation... ironically, the only culture which would tolerate their disgusting behaviour for any length of time.
I don't intend to defend or condemn Sir John A. MacDonald or any other historical figure here. He had virtues and faults; an imperfect man living in an imperfect time in an imperfect world, as are we all. These latter-day Puritan scolds demand of other- better- people what they do not possess themselves. They are intellectually and emotionally immature hypocrites and should be treated as such.
