John goes to work the next day, but between the ham radio incident and the upcoming anniversary of his father's death, he's pretty much a mess. That night, he again manages to contact Frank, and realizes that, impossible though it is, he's really talking to his father in 1969. He tries to convince Frank of this by telling him things about their family that only he would know, but Frank naturally enough assumes he's some creepy stalker, and tells John to stay away from his family. Realizing that his father is going to die in the warehouse fire the next day, and desperate to save his life, John tries to make Frank believe him by telling him what's going to happen in the next game of the Series. He then tells the incredulous Frank about the fire. It turns out that there were two possible ways to escape the warehouse and Frank chose the wrong one. Just before Frank cuts him off, he shouts to him not to follow his instincts- to go the other way.
It is the best night John's had since he was a kid, and he goes to bed elated. His sleep is troubled, however, by dreams of having attended his mother's funeral as a boy. He wakes up in a cold sweat and tries to call her, but keeps getting a deli. Confused and shaken, he goes to work only to realize that, by saving Frank's life, he has somehow changed the timeline. The Nightingale Killer, who had murdered three women has, in this reality, killed ten times and to his horror, John finds that one of the victims was his mother.
