As it turns out, its origins can be traced back to the 1550's, when the jig-a lively dance- became popular in Europe. The name of the dance is thought to be derived from the French word "giguer" which means "to frolic or gambol" ("giga" in Spanish). It may also owe something to the German word for violin: "geige".
