I've seen three film versions of P & P... the 1940 version starring Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier, the 1995 miniseries with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth, and the 2005 movie starring Kiera Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen. The miniseries is by far the definitive version; the 1940 film has its charms, but pales in comparison to the 1995 series. As for the 2005 movie... well, the less said about that, the better. It's pretty awful.
One of the things which elevates the 1995 version above the others is its excellent casting choices. All of the actors seem perfect in their parts, and I particularly enjoy Alison Steadman as a scene stealing Mrs. Bennet, and David Bamber as the delightfully obsequious Mr. Collins. I was glad someone suggested re-watching P & P, loved every minute of these two episodes and look forward to #3 and 4 hopefully next week.
