In any case, those are all the films I can think of at the moment which I've seen that contain actors playing more than one role. No doubt there are some which I'm forgetting and a lot more which I haven't seen.
I was chatting the other day with a few young nephews who, after finishing the LOTR books, had watched Peter Jackson's trilogy. In the course of the conversation, it was mentioned that John Rhys-Davies both played Gimli and voiced the Ent Treebeard. This got me to thinking about what other movies I've seen over the years in which an actor/actress plays more than one role. Here are all the ones I can think of; no guarantee that I haven't missed a few. Perhaps the earliest one I saw as a child: Hayley Mills in The Parent Trap (1961), playing twin sisters separated as infants who meet unexpectedly at summer camp. Then of course, there's Christian Bale in The Prestige (2006) who plays both Alfred and Bernard Fallon, twin brothers and magicians in Victorian London. It's been years since I've seen this one, but Richard Chamberlain as both King Louis XIV and his twin Philippe, the firstborn and rightful King of France in The Man In The Iron Mask (1977): There's also Charlie Chaplin in The Great Dictator (1940), in the roles of both Adenoid Hynkel and a Jewish barber. John Cleese played numerous parts in 1975's Monty Python and the Holy Grail... too many for me to remember them all here, but the French Taunter and Sir Lancelot were two of them. Another one I haven't seen in years: The Man From Snowy River (1982) in which Kirk Douglas plays two estranged brothers- Spur and Mr. Harrison. And heck, almost the entire cast of The Wizard Of Oz (1939) The absolute king of multiple parts in the same film is probably Alec Guinness who, in the black comedy Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949) stars as eight separate characters: Elsa Lanchester, marvelous in everything she was ever in, is memorable in 1935's Bride of Frankenstein as both Mary Shelley and the titular Bride: The Island (2005) stars Ewan Mc Gregor in dual roles as Tom Lincoln and Lincoln Echo Six. This film started out promisingly but sadly devolved into a mindless chase scene/big explosion movie as is so common with Michael Bay projects. Last but certainly not least, probably my favourite dual role actor: Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins (1964) as both Bert and the senior Mr. Dawes: Incidentally, Mary Poppins has been back in the news lately for having its rating raised to PG; in a world where young children in public schools are being handed books with graphic depictions of sex acts, the word 'hottentot' is considered too risque for their delicate little ears. We live in very stupid times. In any case, those are all the films I can think of at the moment which I've seen that contain actors playing more than one role. No doubt there are some which I'm forgetting and a lot more which I haven't seen.

About MeI'm a lover of good books, classic movies, and well-written shows (as well as some pretty cheesy ones, to be completely honest). Categories
