― David Mamet
However, the music in this scene is delightful, not surprising since it was composed by the always excellent Henry Mancini; it's titled, aptly enough, The Pie In The Face Polka.
“We must have a pie. Stress cannot exist in the presence of a pie.” ― David Mamet It was, of course, Pi Day yesterday (see link below for the origins of the event). I was at work all day, but had made an apple pie the night before; it was quite good, if I do say so myself. A late winter storm hit late yesterday afternoon and snow came down quickly for a while; these three pictures were taken between 5:30 and 6:00 pm. The wind was quite high and my power went off a couple of times, but not for too long. To celebrate Pi Day, here's a scene from the monumental flop The Great Race (1965) starring Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, and Natalie Wood, written and directed by Blake Edwards who was also responsible for, among other films, Breakfast At Tiffany's which I mentioned the other day in my post about knitting. The movie is about a car race from New York to Paris and part of the reason it failed is because its costs ballooned out of control; this scene contributed to that. It's a huge pie fight which took five days to film and involved destroying a giant multi-layered cake and throwing some 4000 pies. Also, the cast and crew took a weekend off in the middle of filming the scene and when they returned to work on Monday, the fruit pies smeared all over the scenery had spoiled and resulted in a ghastly smell. They had to pay to get the set cleaned before filming could resume, and then get more pies to smear around to replace the spoiled ones. Oh, and Natalie Wood almost choked on pie filling after getting hit in the open mouth with one of the pies. In the end, filming the remarkably silly scene cost what would be, in today's money, close to 2 million dollars- about $200,000 of that just for pastries alone. However, the music in this scene is delightful, not surprising since it was composed by the always excellent Henry Mancini; it's titled, aptly enough, The Pie In The Face Polka.
