It was pouring rain so we couldn't go for our accustomed post-dinner walk; instead we watched the 2005 version of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. I actually enjoy this film; though not perfect by any means, it gets a lot right, and I had hopes that the film series would be a successful one. Unfortunately, I was disappointed by the 2008 adaptation of Prince Caspian and didn't bother to watch The Voyage of the Dawn Treader when it was released in 2010. It was apparently a mess, and signalled an end to this attempt at a live action film series of The Chronicles of Narnia. I would like to one day see a well done adaptation- whether live action or animated- of CS Lewis' book series; so far nothing I've seen has really done justice to his tales. |
We generally host a games night on New Year's Eve, so we did the same this year, although it was- for the second year in a row- much smaller than it usually is. We played Scrabble, then Trivial Pursuit- I got a new Genus Edition with updated questions for Christmas from one of my sisters. I won Scrabble, but we didn't finish Trivial Pursuit before midnight. I was in the lead with three pieces of pie when we quit, though not assured of a win... two other players had two pieces of pie each. Word games and trivia are kind of my thing. If I wanted to lose badly, I'd be playing Settlers of Catan or something like that which requires planning and strategy. The official fireworks were cancelled of course, because our city is lame and covid-crazy, but plenty of people had their own including my parents' neighbour. This is a really bad picture of one. Also, my parents' cat Smokey, who was not amused. I spent New Years Day with my sister's family in the Valley, and her kids introduced us to the game Gartic Phone, which is like Telestrations, only played on your phone, tablet, or whatever. Up to 14 players can participate; we played with a mix of kids and adults, and it was all kinds of fun. Highly recommend it. Also spent some quality time with their golden retriever mix, Chloe: Yesterday was a full day: church in the morning, lunch with my parents, brief drop-in visits with two sisters and their families, and then a zoom meeting with the entire clan in the early evening. I spent the rest of the evening with two other sisters who- I'm sorry to have to confess this- are addicted to Hallmark movies. They have literally watched one a day all through the Christmas season. I, meanwhile, have barely recovered from watching the one they talked me into sitting through two Christmases ago. They suckered me into watching another one last night. It was bad. It was so-o-o bad: much worse than the one two years ago. It was called Frosty something-or-other (I can't remember the full name) and starred Jewel Staite- Kaylee in Firefly- who has apparently fallen upon hard times. It's possible that I've watched stupider things over the course of my life, but I struggle to call any to mind. Even my sisters, who are hardcore Hallmarkers, admitted that it was beyond terrible. Every character was unlikable, and so incredibly stupid that it's amazing they were able to form coherent sentences let alone be a teacher and a successful author, which the movie would have us believe that the two main characters are. It was so bad that at one point they're being chased by a bear and I was rooting for the bear to eat them; the movie would have been at least 45 minutes shorter if that had happened. Alas, we were not so fortunate and the film dragged on from one idiotic scene to the next. The next time my sisters convince me to watch one of those things, it'll be snowing on the fourth of July.

About MeI'm a lover of good books, classic movies, and well-written shows (as well as some pretty cheesy ones, to be completely honest). Categories
