While staying overnight at my sister's place at Thanksgiving, an assortment of the older nephews and nieces picked the first Doctor Strange movie to watch after the little ones were in bed. I had seen Doctor Strange before, not long after it came out, had vague recollections that I had thought it wasn't so bad, and wasn't opposed to watching it again. But not too far into it, I found my attention slipping and my eyes drooping. It was late, of course, and I'd had a series of late nights and early mornings- and the room was dark- but still. I couldn't go to bed, because I was going to be sleeping on the couch the kids were sitting on, so I grabbed my Kobo and continued my reading of In Search of the Castaways which kept me awake until the movie was over. This got me to wondering about the rewatchability factor of the Marvel movies... Benedict Cumberbatch is a good actor, he does a fine job as Dr. Strange, and it was an amusing enough film to watch, once, but I can't see it's appeal beyond that. There are plenty of films that I can watch over and over again- can quote whole swathes of- and enjoy every time. Not so with any of the Marvel flicks; I never have a desire to watch them more than once, if at all. To be fair, I'm not exactly the target audience for Marvel movies; my viewing of the franchise has been spotty at best, and I haven't seen any of the latest incarnations, on large or small screen. So, is it just me, or do these films just not hold up in the long run?
