My favourite knitting scene in a movie is actually in Mrs. Miniver (1942). It takes place while she and her family are sheltering during a bombing run by German planes. Greer Garson gives a master class in understated acting, as she expresses so much simply by pausing her knitting as they listen to the whistle of a falling bomb, then quietly resuming her stitches.
While not watching the Oscars, I completed a couple of knitting projects which have been hanging around, unfinished- a cushion cover which I had to finish sewing together: Then I grafted the last stitches of the toe on the second of the pair of slipper socks I made out of some leftover yarn from another project: On the topic of Oscar-winning movies and knitting, there are a number of award winning films which feature a knitting scene, the most famous of which is probably in Breakfast At Tiffany's (1961). In it, the main character Holly Golightly (played by Audrey Hepburn) is knitting some red... thing. The movie was nominated for five academy awards and won two, for best score and best original song- Moon River- which was a deserved win for Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer. I'm not going to discuss the movie because I cordially dislike it- and no, it's not because of Mickey Rooney's cringey performance as Mr. Yunioshi. Mostly it's because I'm irritated by every character in this film, and- full confession- I'm not the biggest fan of Audrey Hepburn's acting style; she so often plays spacey, ditzy characters. As she does here. Again. In this movie particularly, her portrayal of a "free spirit" so-called, is especially and transparently try hard, further evinced by her apartment, which is meant to be eclectic and eccentric (like Golightly) but in my opinion is just garish and too obviously a statement about her character. Mrs. Miniver won six academy awards: best picture, best actress, best supporting actress, best director, best screenplay, and best cinematography.
