Now-king Ignosi comes to see them; all of the factions of Kukuanas have now sworn allegiance to him, even those who had fought against them. Quatermain asks him what he's going to do about the witch Gagool, and Ignosi says that she's in custody and will be executed for her crimes. Quatermain says that he understands the impulse but suggests that it might be useful to keep her alive. She's older than anyone else and possesses a wealth of knowledge about the land and its history. He says that she might be able to tell them how to make their way to King Solomon's Mines, if they can get her to talk. Grateful for all they've done to help him, Ignosi agrees to leave Gagool alive for the present time.
Sir Henry swiftly recovers from his wounds but worryingly, Good develops an infection and slips into a high fever which causes delirium. Foulata refuses to leave his side, and for days cares for him constantly, managing to get him to drink some fluid and working to bring his fever down. After day five, Good's fever breaks and they realize that he's going to survive. As he recovers his strength, Quatermain watches Foutana care tenderly for Good and worries that the girl is getting much too fond of the man. Good asks Quatermain to translate for him and thanks Foutana for her care; she blushes.
Meanwhile, Ignosi has been busily setting up his government but has taken time to try to find out more about the way to the Mines. He tells them that there is a path called Solomon's Road which leads to a deep cave in the mountains, which is where the bodies of all the kings of Kukuanaland are entombed- in fact, Twala's body has now been taken there as well. It is said- Ignosi tells them- that there is a secret chamber somewhere in there called the Place of Death which only Twala and Gagool knew how to access. There are old tales of a white man who, led by a Kukuanan woman, found his way to it, and to untold wealth in jewels and treasure. But- according to legend- the woman betrayed him and then he was driven away by the king of the time (they assume that this was Jose Silvestra, whose frozen body they found earlier in their travels). Since then, no one has ventured into the chamber or, indeed, knows where it is, except the ancient witch Gagool.
A few days after this a party sets off, consisting of the three Englishmen (all now healthy enough to travel), Ignosi's right hand man Infadoos, Gagool, who insists on being carried on a litter by two men, some guards, and also Foulata, who comes along to take care of Good-er, all of them.
