In any case, we had a lovely meal of chicken, roasted potatoes, and bacon-wrapped asparagus, followed by sticky toffee pudding for dessert. Afterwards we watched the 1982 film adaptation of The Scarlet Pimpernel starring Anthony Andrews, Jane Seymour, and Ian McKellen. While the 1934 version with Leslie Howard will always hold a special place in my heart- it was my first exposure to Sir Percy Blakeney and inspired me to read the book- I do have a fondness for this incarnation as well. It's a lot of fun, and Andrews' Sir Percy mincing about, peering critically at M. Chauvelin's cravat through his lorgnette is ridiculously funny: "Sink me! Your tailors have betrayed you!"
All in all, it was good to "pull up a chair and forget about life" for the evening and I much enjoyed revisiting Revolutionary France and Georgian England with the Scarlet Pimpernel and his league.
