Woke up to another day of rain... "For the rain it raineth every day." - William Shakespeare Related Posts:Well, Canada Day was a bit of a washout- literally. The weather remains rainy and wet, though it was mostly foggy on Saturday, with periods of light drizzle. It was much too foggy for the air show over the harbour to take place, so that was scrubbed. Too bad, because that was really the only official activity I was planning to attend. Other than the fireworks, of course, but they ended up being cancelled as well- and for the same reason. They were rescheduled for Sunday night, but by then it was pouring again so they've been completely cancelled now. In any case, I met up with one of my sisters Saturday afternoon and we took a rather damp walk through the Dartmouth Commons: Afterwards we picked up some Chinese food for supper and went back to her place to watch a movie. After that, since there were no fireworks I went home, which is just as well because it was Potluck Sunday at church the following day and I had to cook a chicken. So that was Canada Day. If I sound a little less than enthusiastic well, I admit that the last few years I've really struggled to work up any enthusiasm for the day. I love my country, really I do, but... well. Under our current regime it's rather grim. I'm grateful for what we have in this country, but saddened by the things- important things- which we've lost. On a lighter note, The Tattoo on Friday night was amazing as usual. Fortunately, though it had been pouring earlier in the day, the weather when we were standing in line to go through the metal detectors at the door was just extremely foggy with a fine mist coming down. A good thing, too, because the whole security set up slowed the entrances down to a crawl. They had to delay the start of the show for almost half an hour because it took so long for everyone to get into the building. Ridiculous. Once again I somehow set off the detector, no idea why, so yet again some security person was poking through my purse. Sigh. Though the rain had pretty much let up, it was quite foggy, as I mentioned. The Old Town Clock was shrouded in mist when we emerged from the building after the Tattoo was over. The NS Tattoo is my favourite event to attend- and we do every year, unless something major comes up. In case you're wondering, a Tattoo is a display of military music and forces, though it has expanded now to include some other musical acts, gymnasts, etc. But the focus remains primarily military in nature. The word 'tattoo' is rooted in a 17th century Dutch term, "doe den tap toe" which basically means "turn off the tap". This was a signal sounded by either a drum or bugle to instruct innkeepers and publicans to stop serving beer, and recall soldiers to their barracks. "Tap toe" was Anglicized to "tattoo" and became synonymous with a drumbeat... hence the term "the devil's tattoo" which refers to tapping one's fingers on a table in idleness. Anyway, here's some pictures I took during the show:
