Mary returns to the sound of his screaming and, in a temper herself, decides to tell him a few hard truths. This is humorous because she's also a rather selfish child, but she's irritated beyond belief to have to deal with her cousin's over-the-top behaviour. It's because Mary's not a particularly good natured child that she's willing to tell Colin off in a way which the servants, who have deferred to his whims since he was a baby, would never do.
