When I was in Edinburgh, I spent some time visiting Edinburgh Castle and then headed down the Royal Mile. The Royal Mile is the route along a few streets which one travels from the Castle to Holyrood Palace, which is roughly about a mile long. The Royal Mile has all sorts of historic buildings along it (besides the Castle and Palace) such as John Knox's house, and I had a great time poking about the area. To my delight, in Canongate I found a lovely little store which I couldn't resist entering- Ye Olde Christmas Shoppe. It's a small shop which sells only Christmas ornaments, and is chock-a-block full of them.
Last Sunday afternoon, I went down to my parents' place with a few of my sisters to help them decorate the Christmas tree. Mom & Dad's tree never has any theme- or rather, it's theme might be termed "Christmas through the years" since it incorporates ornaments which belonged to our grandparents, ones made at school, and ones picked up over the years by various family members. It's an eclectic mix. As we were unpacking the ornaments- no small task- I pulled out an angel which I had picked up on my first trip to Great Britain. I also picked up something for a sister-in-law who collects Christmas ornaments. There were sets of Henry VIII and his wives which you could buy as a set or separately. I couldn't justify buying them all, since they were a bit pricey and I didn't have a lot of extra room in my suitcase, but I bought the Katherine Parr ornament for her (Henry's last wife, who outlasted the old goat). I found a picture online of the same set: Mom and Dad's tree isn't a stylish one, with its mish-mash of everything from hand-blown glass ornaments to misshapen salt dough ones, but it is full of memories, each decoration with its own story (like this one). I've never seen a Christmas tree more beautiful.
