My nephews drew pictures of some of their favourite parts of the book so far. The top one- by the youngest- is the Knight battle between King Pellinore and Sir Grummore Grummorson. The picture to the right is of the Wart searching for Cully in the Forest Sauvage and getting caught in a flurry of arrows. The picture below- by the eldest- is of the Wart, transformed by Merlin into a hawk, spending the night in the mews.
On his last birthday, I gave one of my nephews the wonderful 1938 book The Sword In The Stone by T.H. White. I remember the first time I borrowed the novel from the library at my elementary school when I was a child: I read it voraciously then, upon finishing it, immediately started it again. I was sure my nephew would love it just as much, which has proven to be true. Actually, his younger brothers are loving it as well because they are reading it aloud during their daily story time. The Sword In The Stone tells the story of the childhood of the orphaned boy Wart who is being brought up by Sir Ector with the view of having him become squire to his son Kay. Little does he know that the scrawny Wart is actually Arthur Pendragon, son of King Uther, destined to pull the famed sword out of the stone. This fact is, however, known by the wizard Merlin, mostly because he is living life in reverse. He arrives to act as a tutor for both Wart and Kay- a rather unorthodox one who uses his magical powers to take Wart on a series of amazing adventures. His purpose is to teach the young Arthur the things which he should know before he becomes a king. My nephews drew pictures of some of their favourite parts of the book so far.
