d. The world owes them a living. The people in this film seem to have the belief that anyone who has more than they do should be willing to support them. The owners of the apartment building Roger and Mark live in are wealthy, so they think that they shouldn't have to pay their rent. They freeload at the coffee shop. They think it's perfectly fine to steal money from an ATM, no doubt because big banks are evil. The truth is, the world owes them nothing and they're all deadbeats and grubby thieves.
They also seem to be under the impression that "artists" shouldn't be expected to do anything as mundane as work to pay their bills. This is ridiculous. If your art isn't good enough for you to make a living from it- and theirs definitely isn't- then it's a hobby and you need to get a job to make ends meet just like everyone else.
e. Transgressiveness makes one edgy and relevant. This is seen most clearly in the song "La Vie Boheme", where the main characters are all shouting out vulgarities and behaving in a sleazy manner- mooning the businessmen, grinding on each other, etc. The film takes an admiring and approving view of the vandalism, promiscuousness, and profligacy which these people engage in, as though these behaviours show how revolutionary and "real" they are. But throughout the film, you'll notice that these people don't have any rational explanations for the things they do. For example, protesting the creation of the cyber cafe; Benny has logical reasons for building it, such as improving their community and providing employment for the cash-strapped locals. The main characters oppose this but have no cogent arguments, so regress into name-calling, violence and obscenity. In what way is this relevant? It's not even edgy anymore: just drearily predictable, unintelligent, and frankly, dull.
Because the world isn't perfect, the characters in Rent want to tear it all down but they have no idea of what or how to build something in its place. And they're so selfish, self-absorbed and useless that any society they did come up with would be a dystopian nightmare.
