When Kylo Ren sees ol' Uncle Luke, he freaks out and orders his men to train all of their guns on Luke and fire. The First Empire troops do so, and are shocked when they cease fire and Luke emerges from the smoke, unharmed. When he sees this, Kylo Ren goes down to face Luke himself.
When we left off last time, the very few rebels who'd survived Holdo's "brilliant" plan had taken shelter in an old Alliance stronghold. The First Order, led by Kylo Ren and General Hux, are now firing on the doors of the fortress, which are in danger of buckling. It's all looking pretty hopeless when suddenly Luke shows up. Well it's about time. He embraces Leia and gives her some dice which apparently belonged to Han... um, okay. He then goes out to face the First Order by himself leaving the about half dozen remaining rebels inside. Meanwhile, the rest of the rebels are just standing around watching instead of trying to figure out how to get away. Finally Poe, the only one who seems to have a few functioning brain cells, realizes that Luke is creating a distraction so that they can make their getaway. It seems like Luke could have mentioned that on his way out the door, but why expect logical behaviour from anyone this late in the movie. The caves are a big maze and finding a way out seems hopeless until a salt dog (googles) oops- crystal fox luckily and improbably turns up to lead them to an exit. Unfortunately, when they get there, the way has been blocked by a cave in. Amazingly, Rey turns up at that exact point outside the caves and levitates all the rocks blocking the exit, saving everyone, because of course she does. While everybody is scurrying out the back way, Luke and Kylo are engaging in a light saber battle out front. Kylo runs Luke through only to realize, when this does nothing, that Luke isn't actually there: he's projecting himself through the force. And for some reason, this projection can be permeable or impermeable depending on what the scene demands. Luke tells Kylo that he won't be the last Jedi then disappears. The Millennium Falcon flies away with the survivors and Kylo Ren is really unhappy when he realizes that he's been outsmarted by a bunch of idiots. Back on the island, Luke's force use has apparently done him in; he climbs up on a rock, watches the suns set and then disappears, I guess to join the force like Yoda, Ben, and his dad. On the Falcon, Leia and Rey realize that he's gone and Rey asks what will become of the rebellion. Leia says that they have what they need to rebuild. This seemed rather unlikely to me until I realized that they've got Rey, who can do anything and never fails. In the end, we return to the hated casino planet and see the slave kids who Finn and Rose didn't free listening to a story one of them is telling about Luke Skywalker. Afterwards, the young stable boy who seems to have the force walks outside and, holding his broom like a lightsaber, looks up at the stars. I actually like this part as it points out the importance of telling heroic stories. Unfortunately, it also underlines what the biggest problem with these new films. I'll discuss that in my next Last Jedi post.
