I'm often angered at the betrayal of Canadian rights and freedoms by our government, whose one job should be to secure and uphold those rights, and by the weakness of those who would meekly accede to those God-given freedoms being wrested from us. But I'm also heartened by the fact that there are many who do stand up and defend Canadian liberties- regrettably, few of them in the political sphere- and by the vast majority of Canadians who don't say anything, but quietly live decent lives which contradict the shouted narrative of division, intolerance, and hate. This is a darker post that I usually have on Canada Day, but it's been that kind of year. I'll no doubt be in a more optimistic frame of mind later today; I'm participating in that very Canadian pass time, canoeing down the Shubenacadie River.
