I'm away all this weekend, gone to Sing! the conference/concert hosted by Christian singer/songwriters Keith & Kristyn Getty. The theme is "Created, Commanded, and Compelled to Sing!" I'm no doubt having a great time, as I love to sing and enjoy many of the Getty's songs. Below is one of the songs they perform which I really like: He Will Hold Me Fast. This isn't a new song; the lyrics were written by Ada Habershon in 1906 and she sent them to prolific hymn writer Robert Harkness, who set her words to music. Then, in 2013, Matt Merker, who was working on setting old hymns to new tunes, wrote a third verse and new music for the song. The result is below. I particularly like the intro played by the violinist- Be Still My Soul: Be still, my soul, the Lord is on thy side; Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain. Leave to thy God to order and provide; In every change He, faithful, will remain. Be still, my soul, thy best, thy heavenly friend Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end. He Will Hold Me Fast “When I fear my faith will fail Christ will hold me fast When the tempter would prevail He will hold me fast I could never keep my hold Through life’s fearful path For my love is often cold He must hold me fast Chorus: He will hold me fast He will hold me fast For my Savior loves me so He will hold me fast Those He saves are His delight Christ will hold me fast Precious in His holy sight He will hold me fast He’ll not let my soul be lost His promises shall last Bought by Him at such a cost He will hold me fast CHORUS For my life He bled and died Christ will hold me fast Justice has been satisfied He will hold me fast Raised with Him to endless life He will hold me fast Till our faith is turned to sight When he comes at last CHORUS Related Posts:In choir, we're singing Ocho Kandelikas, a song about Hanukkah. It was written in 1983 by Flory Jagoda, a Jewish American originally from Bosnia. She and her family fled Sarajevo when the Nazis invaded in 1941, she met an American soldier, got married, and arrived in the United States as a war bride. She is an expert guitarist/songwriter and specialises in songs written in Ladino, the language spoken by Sephardic (Spanish) Jews which is rooted in Old Spanish. Her song Ocho Kandelikas has a very Latin sound to it, and its lyrics describe the excitement felt by a child at the lighting of the menorah during Hanukkah. Here are the lyrics and translation:
This is a choir singing the choral version of the song which we're doing: And this is Flory Jagoda performing her song herself, just because she's so dang charming:
