"Is 'The Wind in the Willows' a children's book? Is 'Alice in Wonderland?' Is 'Treasure Island?' These are masterpieces which we read with pleasure as children, but with how much more pleasure when we are grown-up."

This fall in choir we're revisiting a song we performed several years ago: Hearth & Fire by Gordon Bok. Bok is a singer/songwriter from Maine who specialises in folk songs. He wrote Hearth & Fire in 1980 and said this about the song: "I made this one Thanksgiving, surrounded by good company, a warm house, and plentiful food; and I could not keep from think of friends who, for illness, poverty, distance or death, could not share those things with me." It's a beautiful song, and a favourite with our choir. Here are the lyrics: HEARTH AND FIRE (Gordon Bok) Hearth and fire be ours tonight And all the dark outside, Fair the night, and kind on you Wherever you may bide. And I'll be the sun upon your head, The wind about your face; My love upon the path you tread And upon your wanderings, peace. Wine and song be ours tonight, And all the cold outside; Peace and warmth be yours tonight Wherever you may bide. Hearth and fire be ours tonight And the wind in the birches bare; Oh, that the wind we hear tonight, Would find you well and fair. Here's Gordon Bok himself singing Hearth & Fire:
