Alerted to the danger, people in the town keep their houses locked and guarded against T.I.M. but he eventually finds a place to eat and rest, regaining his strength to fight his perceived enemies. Griffin sends a letter to Kemp telling him that the town- Port Burdock- was no longer under the Queen's rule, but under his: Invisible Man the First. He also informs Kemp that, by the way, he intends to kill him. Understandably alarmed, Kemp makes sure that his windows and doors are locked and waits with a revolver in hand. He has written a letter to Adye again, telling him that he's going to act as bait for T.I. M. Unfortunately, Adye stops by to inform Kemp that Griffin, unseen, snatched his letter away from Adye's servant and so knows that they are setting a trap. As Adye leaves, the Invisible Man -who is lurking outside- attacks him and grabs his gun. As they struggle, Griffin shoots Adye.
We also find out that Kemp has been searching for Griffin's notebooks, but Marvel insists that he doesn't know where they are. It turns out, however, that he's lying (shocker). He has the notebooks and sometimes takes them out and looks at them but can't understand them because Griffin wrote them in code. And this is how the book ends.
