I have to say, I've never had much liking for Michael Moore and his manipulative, dishonest films; maybe ask an ordinary Canadian about the wait times in our medical system before praising it to the heavens. But his dishonesty and hypocracy ( Mr. "Capitalism is Bad" apparently owns nine houses) aside, I detest the fact that he ambushed an elderly and Alzheimer's stricken Heston for a hostile interview which he used in Bowling For Columbine... and I'm getting a little off-topic... suffice to say, I'm looking forward to reading Charlton Heston's thoughts on his life and career.
Most of our week on Prince Edward Isand was spent in the great outdoors: on the beaches, in parks, and on hiking trails. But we did occasionally do some shopping... my two sisters and I all bought Baja hoodies on the Cavendish boardwalk (in different colours) which came in handy on the shore in the evening. I also - not quite sure how it happened- ended up in a used book store on our last day in Charlottetown. There I purchased two autobiographies, one by G.K. Chesterton and one by Charlton Heston. I'm so looking forward to reading these- especially the one by Chesterton, who was a briliant writer. I own a few of his books: The Man Who Was Thursday, The Napoleon of Notting Hill, a colection of his Father Brown stories, and a volume of his essays. I especially like reading his essays on various topics, because he has a way of approaching the issue from an unexpected angle, making the reader consider it in a way (s)he hadn't before. He is in turn flippant and deep, irreverant and profound. And observations about society and human nature which he made nearly a century ago are startlingly relevant in today's crazy world. I've always admired Charlton Heston, having been raised on a ritual viewing of Ben Hur every Easter (I now own the 50th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition), with The Ten Commandments occasionally thrown in for good measure. In his later years, he filmed a movie- The Little Kidnappers- just a few miles down the road from where I lived growing up. I "visited" a friend's house who lived close to where they were filming, but sadly never actually caught sight of the man himself.

About MeI'm a lover of good books, classic movies, and well-written shows (as well as some pretty cheesy ones, to be completely honest). Categories
