Where Did It Come From?
A better known example is found in Charles Dickens' Pickwick Papers from 1837: "I look upon you, sir, as a man who has placed himself beyond the pale of society, by his most audacious, disgraceful, and abominable public conduct."
So that's the origin of the idiom "beyond the pale".
