The plot centers on four boys- Sparky, Jinx, Smudge, and Frankie- who, in the early 1960's had formed a singing group which they called 'The Plaids' ( not to be confused the Four Lads, an actual group).
On their way to the Plaid's first major gig, their car- a '54 Mercury- is broadsided by bus full of schoolgirls who, ironically, are on their way to see the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show. The guys are instantly killed, and that seems to be that, until...
....present day, when the Plaids return to earth due to, uh, aligning stars and expanding holes in the ozone layer. Never mind trying to understand: it's shaky science and even shakier theology. In any case, they have come back to perform the show that they never got to do in life. And it's a pretty great show- about an hour and a half of classic songs sung in close 4-part harmony, interspersed with the boys' anecdotes about their pre-death lives and experiences. The songs include 'Three Coins In the Fountain', 'Moments To Remember', 'Sixteen Tons/ Chain Gang', 'Jamaica Farewell', and many more. Fittingly, they close with the song they had been practicing in the car when they were run down: 'Love Is A Many Splendored Thing'.
